Dr. Ramasami got his Bachelor and Master in Leather Technology from Madras University and Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Leeds, UK. He was earlier the Director of the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), Chennai, a constituent unit of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), India and played a vital role of a think tank for the Indian Leather Sector. He has won several awards including Shanthi Swarup Bhatnagar Prize and Padma Sri for contributions to Science and Engineering. Dr. Ramasami is a fellow of several national and international academies in science and is a member of many important national level committees in the Government of India. He has published >200 publications in peer valued journals, 8 chapters in books and >120 general articles and technical reports. He has >27 patents. He also holds Honorary Professorship at the Anna University, Chennai and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore.
