Joint NAM S&T Centre – ZMT Bremen Fellowship in Tropical Coastal Marine Ecology and Biogeochemistry

In line with its resolute efforts to promote South-South and North-South cooperation in science and technology, the NAM S&T Centre has instituted a number of Fellowship schemes that are aimed at supporting the deserving young scientists in the developing countries to establish closer linkages with the Centres of Excellence located in various countries. Among these a Fellowship scheme initiated in June 2007 jointly by the NAM S&T Centre [www.namstct.org] and the Centre for Tropical Marine Ecology (Zentrum für Marine Tropenökologie - ZMT), Bremen, Germany [www.zmt-bremen.de] provides opportunities to the scientists from the developing countries to affiliate themselves with ZMT Bremen to upgrade their research skills and conduct joint research in Tropical Coastal Marine Ecology and Biogeochemistry. Five Fellowships currently available for a maximum duration of 3 months are awarded to only one scientist each from any given developing country in each given year on a strictly competitive basis based on the applicant’s academic and professional background, the plan of work and the mutual research interests of the applicant and ZMT.

Applications are invited for the Joint NAM S&T Centre – ZMT Bremen Fellowship in prescribed format for the year 2008. Under this scheme, ZMT will provide a subsistence allowance of €1000 per month for accommodation, meals and out-of-pocket expenses in Bremen for the duration of the fellowship. NAM S&T Centre will pay the return international airfare from the home country to Bremen, Germany to the selected scientists / researchers only from those member countries of the NAM S&T Centre or members of the NAM S&T – Industry Network, which have no outstanding dues towards the annual membership subscription to the Centre. Applications from defaulting member countries and other developing countries, which are not the members of the NAM S&T Centre are also welcome, but in such cases, the sending country or the candidates themselves will have to arrange for their international travel and pay US$300 to the NAM S&T Centre in advance towards its administrative expenses.

Copies of the guidelines for the Fellowship and the application form are attached. Completed applications recommended by the parent institutions of the applicants may be submitted directly to the NAM S&T Centre. Selection will be made in consultation with ZMT on a first-cum-first basis depending upon the availability of the seats and based on the professional details supplied and the Research Plan submitted by the applicants.

GUIDELINES AND APPLICATION FORM

Background
 

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was concluded by the NAM S&T Centre [www.namstct.org] with the Centre for Tropical Marine Ecology (Zentrum für Marine Tropenökologie - ZMT), Bremen, Germany [www.zmt-bremen.de] on 1st March 2004 to make use of the networks of the two organizations to foster and promote human resource development, capacity building and scientific research; jointly organize and implement training programmes for young scientists from the developing countries in the field of Marine Sciences; provide mutual assistance for their respective programmes and projects; and facilitate contacts amongst scientific community in developing countries. In pursuance thereof, an international workshop-cum-training course on ‘Coastal Ecosystems: Hazards Management and Rehabilitation’ was organized by the Centre at Purwokerto, Indonesia during 8–17 August 2006. A Fellowship scheme has now been initiated jointly by the NAM S&T Centre and ZMT Bremen for providing opportunities to the scientists from the developing countries to affiliate themselves with ZMT to upgrade their research skills and conduct joint research in Marine Ecology.

Objectives

            The objectives of the Joint NAM S&T Centre – ZMT Bremen Fellowship Programme are:

Number of Fellowships

            Up to 5 scientists and researchers from the developing countries will be sponsored each year by the NAM S&T Centre to work at ZMT Bremen under the Joint Fellowship Programme. They will be selected strictly on merit and competitive basis.

Duration of Fellowship          

The maximum duration of Fellowship will be 3 months.

Eligibility

Financial and Other Terms

   v   All expenses in the home country incidental to travel abroad, including expenditure for passport and visa, required medical examinations and vaccinations and miscellaneous expenses such as internal travel to/from the airport of departure in the home country.

v  Salary and other related allowances for the Fellows during the Fellowship period.

v   Cost towards medical insurance to cover the period of Fellowship in Germany.

 

v   Insurance, medical bills or hospitalisation fees.

v  Compensation in the event of death, disability or loss of personal belongings or compensation for damage caused by climatic or other conditions.
